The nutritional control of voluntary feed intake in fish
My research activities aim at a better understanding of the effects of nutrients and dietary energy on the regulation of voluntary feed intake in (growing) fish, using rainbow trout as a model. The understanding and prediction of voluntary feed intake in farmed fish is imperative for maximizing growth performances and minimizing feed losses. Most studies on feed intake regulation in fish use a bio-energetic approach, based on observations that fish regulate feed intake as to ingest a fixed amount of (digestible) energy. Our first series of feeding trials with lipid-rich diets did not indicate a negative feedback from extra dietary lipid on feed intake in rainbow trout of different sizes (50-400 g). The lack of energy intake compensation resulted in increased fat depositions while net protein gains appeared fairly stable. Hence, our further studies focus on the dissociation of the effect of total dietary energy from that of the (energy supplying) nutrients, i.e. protein, lipid and carbohydrates while taking into account the interacting effect between nutrients/energy on their retention efficiencies by the fish. Now, the major question to be answered, based on the hypothesis that fish regulate feed intake as to maximize growth rather than as to ingest a fixed amount of energy, is to better understand the influence of the postingestive cost of the metabolic processing of the nutrients (including that of excesses) on voluntary feed intake. In parallel, in ongoing studies on fishmeal and fish oil replacements by alternative protein and lipid sources, a specific attention is being given to whether these dietary changes affect feed intake, the first prerequisite for good growth.
