My research activities concern studies on biodiversity conservation and on forest ecosystem functioning
Biodiversity Conservation: using butterflies as a model

Studies in the “Landes de Gascogne”, a region dominated by nearly one million hectares of pure maritime pine plantations, have demonstrated the importance of semi-natural habitats such as firebreaks and deciduous woodland for butterfly conservation. Butterfly diversity was related to habitat type and size, but also to landscape composition and structure. Butterfly surveys at stand interiors and at their edges have shown the importance of edge habitat for butterflies, but also indicated that stand interiors are not “empty”. The use of adjacent edge and interior habitats by butterflies is probably a key process in these mosaic landscapes and underlines the importance of landscape heterogeneity for butterfly conservation.

Dispersal in the landscape has been studied for the Speckled Wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria), a species characteristic for deciduous woodlands in our region. Marked butterflies were released in different habitats in the landscape and recaptured in the deciduous woodland patches.
Recent projects on biodiversity conservation study the importance of forest edges for different taxonomic groups (projects BILISSE and BIOLIS) and the effect of landscape connectivity on butterfly communities (project LEVANA).
